A little about the Sky Stone series to date:
This series is set in the magical land of Branzia, a land separated from the rest of Earth due to the presence of magic. Skyla is a seventeen year old girl who doesn’t believe she belongs on Earth. It feels like a dream when she is suddenly whisked away to Branzia and has the special abilities of a Sky Guardian bestowed upon her. After being given the destiny by the gods to end the fighting in this land besieged with war the dream soon becomes a nightmare. Even so, Skyla discovers she does have a place in the world and a mission only she can accomplish with friends she would never have found in the Outside world. Quickly Skyla becomes a legend throughout Branzia as the fire-wielding Phoenix.
Despite Skyla’s new found strength, it turns out that which drives her forward, is also her greatest weakness. Even with the war over, it appears the gods still haven’t finished with her. The fate of all Sky Guardians rest on her shoulders, but with her greatest weakness exposed, she has trouble protecting just herself. She will need to mend her broken heart, or the true fight will be over. With the existence of a previous Phoenix suddenly emerging, Skyla wonders whether history is repeating itself… and will she suffer the same fate as her predecessor?
Sky Stone and Guardian Core are available as both ebooks and paperback from Amazon. Both ebooks are available for only $0.99 US!
About the Author Scarllett Van Dijk
Scarlett Van Dijk was born in 1993 in Geelong, Victoria, before relocating to South Australia with her family. Her love of writing grew during her time at Wilderness School, with her first novel, Sky Stone, begun at the age of fifteen. After graduating high school, Scarlett entered the University of South Australia studying the Bachelor of Medical Radiations (Medical Imaging), completing the degree in 2014. In 2012 Scarlett began writing Guardian Core, the second book in the Sky Stone series, and published this in 2015. Scarlett’s love for creative writing is accompanied by an interest in dancing, reading, and desktop publishing.
Starting the Sky Stone series and Inspiration:
Sky Stone was initially to be a novella, written with the intention of entering a young authors novella competition. However, when the word count exceeded the limit of 20 000 words and was nowhere near competition, Scarlett gave up on that idea and allowed Sky Stone to grow into a full sized novel. After six years of work, on and off, and numerous rewrites, Sky Stone finally hit Amazon in 2014. However, it was not the stand-alone novel Scarlett had hoped for. Despite the blood, sweat, and tears that had fallen in the writing of Sky Stone, a sequel had begun to surface in Scarlett’s mind and demanded to be written. The next year Guardian Core was published.
Scarlett first delved into reading novels at the age of thirteen when she came across her first YA fantasy novel. That novel happened to be one of Tamara Pierce’s ‘Song of the Lioness’ series. Tamara’s books drew her in instantly and soon Scarlett had devoured every one of her books. A couple of years later Scarlett began writing what was to become Sky Stone, although at the time
Scarlett had no idea it would become the first novel in a series. Tamara’s books were a large inspiration for Sky Stone with their strong female characters who were able to achieve their goals and fight despite obstacles which were challenging. Plus, who doesn’t like a good sword fight mixed with a bit of magic and love?
Since then Scarlett has read many more books but stand outs to her have been Robert Jordan’s ‘Wheel of Time’ series and any of Brandon Sanderson’s books. Scarlett hopes to create the sense of wonder in her readers that she feels when reading these books.
